To earn the approval of an India Inc honcho is no mean feat. India Inc can be discerning, analytical and rarely any flaw escapes their critical yet watchful eye. So what was it about Chingari, a homegrown ‘shudh desi’ app that earned it the approval of Indian billionaire businessman Anand Mahindra? The Chairman of Mahindra group proudly claimed on Twitter that he has never downloaded TikTok but will now download Chingari. In a nation obsessed with the picture-perfect Instagram moments, where chic influencers and the social media elite pose in exotic destinations and post stories of delectable food in dazzling outfits – there came an app that stood in stark opposition to the perfection that Instagram stood for. If Instagram was about adhering to rigid social structures, TikTok was about letting loose, doing your own thing, sans inhibitions. Sadly, tensions at the Sino-India border have put a temporary comma, if not a permanent full stop, to the era of TikTok in India. But that hasn’t thwarted the Indians from expressing themselves. Many Indians have now turned to Chingari, a Bangalore-based desi alternative to videshi TikTok, putting the ‘local’ in PM Modi’s call, #VocalForLocal.
